"Indonesia's most famous party island — a beautiful, car-free coral island northwest of Lombok with brilliant white beaches and turquoise waters, where sea turtles swim in the shallows, coral reefs provide excellent snorkelling, and a vibrant sunset strip creates the most social beach scene in Southeast Asia outside Bali."

Overview

Gili Trawangan — the largest of the three Gili Islands northwest of Lombok — has developed from a tiny fishing community into one of Southeast Asia’s most celebrated and most visited beach destinations in the space of roughly three decades. The transformation has been dramatic: from a virtually uninhabited coral island in the 1990s to a beach destination that receives hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, with a complete tourist infrastructure of hotels, restaurants, dive shops, and beach bars covering much of the island’s southern and eastern coastline.

What draws the visitors is still unmistakably real: the beach is genuinely beautiful, with brilliant white coral sand and the vivid turquoise water that results from the shallow lagoon over the white sandy bottom. The coral reefs surrounding the island have some of the best snorkelling and diving in the Indonesian archipelago, with resident sea turtles (very reliably encountered by snorkellers), reef sharks, rays, and outstanding fish diversity. The island is car-free — transport is by horse cart (cidomo) or bicycle — and this absence of motor vehicles gives Gili T a relaxed, human-scaled character that Bali and many other Indonesian destinations have lost.

The three Gili Islands each have distinct personalities: Gili Trawangan (Gili T) is the largest and most social — it has the parties, the dive schools, the beach bars, the sunset strip. Gili Meno (the middle island) is the quietest — smallest, most romantic, least developed. Gili Air is in between — more developed than Meno, quieter than Trawangan, with a growing reputation for yoga and a young-adult market.

The beaches on Gili T’s western coast — the sunset side — are the most celebrated. Sitting on the sand as the sun sets over the volcanic peak of Gunung Agung (Bali’s sacred volcano, 50 km across the water) with a cold beer from one of the beach bars is one of the definitive Southeast Asia beach experiences and one that Gili T provides remarkably reliably when conditions are clear.

How to Reach It

Getting to the Gili Islands

Lombok International Airport (LOP) is the nearest airport:

  • Domestic Indonesia: Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK), Surabaya (SUB) via Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Citilink
  • International: Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia), Singapore (Silk Air/Scoot), some other regional connections

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Bali: The main regional hub with extensive international connections. Many visitors to the Gili Islands transit through Bali.

From Bali to the Gili Islands

By speedboat from Bali: Boats from Padang Bai, Amed, and Serangan on Bali’s east coast to Gili T. Journey approximately 1.5–2.5 hours depending on origin. Multiple operators daily. This is the most popular route for Bali-to-Gili visitors.

From Lombok to the Gili Islands

By speedboat from Bangsal Harbour (North Lombok): The classic departure point — approximately 20–30 minutes by speedboat. Public boats also run (slower and cheaper). From Lombok Airport, take a taxi to Bangsal (approximately 1 hour).

From the Boat to the Island

There is no pier on Gili Trawangan — boats anchor offshore and passengers are transported to the beach by smaller boats or wade ashore through shallow water.

When to Go

Indonesia’s seasons divide broadly into dry and wet monsoon periods:

  • May to October (dry season): The best time. Clear skies, calm seas, best snorkelling and diving visibility. The dominant wind from the southeast provides natural cooling. July–August is peak season.
  • November to April (wet season): More rainfall, rougher seas, reduced snorkelling visibility. December–January are the wettest months. The wet season does not mean constant rain — many days are still good — but conditions are less reliable.
  • Year-round water temperature: 27–28°C — consistently warm in all months.

Accommodation

Gili T has accommodation across the full spectrum:

  • Aston Sunset Beach Resort: An upscale option on the sunset strip, well-positioned.
  • Ombak Sunset Bungalows: A popular mid-range choice with classic bungalow style on the western coast.
  • Kokomo Resort: A reliable mid-range option.
  • Budget guesthouses and hostels: Abundant options in the main village area and around the island. Gili T has long been backpacker-friendly.

Experiences

Snorkelling with Sea Turtles

Sea turtles are the most-asked-about attraction at the Gilis. Green and hawksbill turtles are resident around all three islands. The most reliable spots for turtle encounters are at the northern point of Gili T, around the “Turtle Heaven” area — snorkellers frequently find themselves surrounded by several feeding turtles simultaneously. Guides from dive schools can take snorkellers directly to the best spots.

Scuba Diving

The Gili Islands are one of the world’s most popular (and most affordable) places to learn to dive. PADI Open Water certification here costs a fraction of the price charged in Europe or America. The dive sites include:

  • Halik: A drift dive with a resident population of turtles and reef sharks.
  • Shark Point: Consistent reef shark sightings (whitetip, blacktip, occasionally hammerhead).
  • Biorocks: Artificial reef structures seeded with coral transplants — an active conservation project with interesting results.

Cycling Around the Island

The full circuit of Gili T by bicycle takes approximately 45–60 minutes. The northern and eastern coastlines are quieter and less developed than the southern tourist strip, and the views of Lombok’s mountains and the other Gili islands from the eastern coast are beautiful.

Sunset Strip

The western beach of Gili T (the sunset side) has a line of beach bars, swings in the water, hammocks, and low tables in the sand. From approximately 4 p.m. onward, the strip fills with people enjoying cold drinks and watching the sun set over the Bali Sea and the volcanic silhouette of Gunung Agung. One of the most reliably pleasant social beach experiences in Southeast Asia.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is Gili Trawangan appropriate for families? With consideration. The party reputation (the main strip has nightlife until 3–4 a.m.) makes Gili T less ideal for families with young children than Gili Air or Gili Meno. The beach and snorkelling are excellent for older children and teenagers. Families seeking a quieter experience should consider Gili Air.

Is there really no transport other than horse carts and bicycles? Correct. Motorised vehicles are banned on all three Gili Islands. Transport is by horse cart (cidomo), bicycle, or on foot. This is one of the genuine and most appealing aspects of the island. It does mean that luggage transport is slow and distances feel further.

How has Gili T recovered from the 2018 earthquake? The August 2018 Lombok earthquake (7.0 magnitude) caused significant damage on the Gili Islands and Lombok. Most properties have now been rebuilt or repaired. Check the status of specific hotels when booking. The diving infrastructure and reef have not been significantly affected.

Can you day-trip to Gili Meno or Gili Air from Gili T? Yes, easily. Inter-island speedboats run frequently between the three islands. A day visit to the quieter Gili Meno (famous for its underwater sculpture garden, the Nest, with a resident turtle population) is a good complement to Gili T.
