Verdict

"Turkey's most legendary beach — a 2.5-kilometre crescent of extraordinarily fine white sand on the western coast of Alanya's bay, where the ancient legend of Cleopatra's visit, the dramatic silhouette of the Alanya castle above, and the warm, clear Mediterranean water create the Turkish Riviera's most evocative and beautifully framed beach experience."

The Beach

Cleopatra Beach earns its name from a legend that the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra VII and her lover Mark Antony swam in this bay during their eastern Mediterranean travels in 41 BC — and that the extraordinarily fine white sand was specially imported from Egypt for Cleopatra’s pleasure. This story is almost certainly apocryphal, but the sand itself is genuine: Cleopatra Beach has some of the finest-grained, whitest sand on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, and the legend has become inseparable from the beach’s identity and the city of Alanya’s tourist image.

The beach occupies the western side of the Alanya peninsula’s sheltered bay — a 2.5-kilometre curve of the whitest sand, with the calm, warm Mediterranean Sea (26–28°C in summer) and the dramatic red limestone cliffs of the Alanya Kalesi (castle) as the backdrop. The castle — a Byzantine and Seljuk fortification dating from the 13th century, built by the Seljuk Sultan Kayqubad I on a 250-metre promontory — dominates the skyline behind the beach with a completeness that is rare in the modern world: you swim in the sea, look up, and see a 1,000-year-old castle. The visual composition is extraordinary.

Alanya is one of Turkey’s most visited resort cities — a German, Russian, and British charter tourism hub with extensive hotel infrastructure, a lively waterfront, and the full complement of Mediterranean resort facilities. It is neither the most exclusive nor the most scenic of the Turkish Riviera’s destinations (Kaş and Kalkan to the west have more dramatic rocky scenery; Antalya has a better preserved old quarter), but it has the most complete resort package at accessible price points, and Cleopatra Beach is the best maintained and most beautiful of Alanya’s beaches.

Getting There

Getting to Alanya

Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP): A regional airport with direct charter flights from Germany, UK, Scandinavia, and Russia in summer season.

Antalya Airport (AYT): The main Turkish Riviera hub, approximately 130 km west of Alanya:

  • Direct flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham (Turkish Airlines, easyJet, Jet2, TUI)
  • Direct flights from Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia, and throughout Europe
  • From Antalya Airport to Alanya: approximately 2.5 hours by bus (HAVAS, Kamil Koç) or 2 hours by car

By bus: Long-distance buses from Istanbul, Ankara, and other Turkish cities to Alanya — a very long journey from Istanbul (approximately 10 hours) but well served.

Best Time to Visit

Alanya has one of Turkey’s warmest and sunniest climates:

  • June to September: The beach season. Air temperatures 30–35°C, sea temperature 26–28°C, consistent sunshine. August is peak season with maximum crowds and prices.
  • May and October: Excellent shoulder months. Still warm (22–27°C), the sea is swimmable (22–24°C), and significantly fewer visitors.
  • November to April: Cooler (12–20°C), with rain in the winter months. The beach season is over but the castle, caves, and cultural sites are quieter and perfectly accessible.

Places to Stay

Alanya has one of Turkey’s largest hotel inventories — thousands of rooms at every price point:

  • Cleopatra Beach hotels: Multiple hotels directly on or adjacent to the beach — The Bosphorus Hotel, Grand Kaptan, and other established properties.
  • All-inclusive resorts: A significant portion of Alanya’s accommodation is in large all-inclusive complexes, popular with German and Russian package tourists.
  • Boutique hotels in Alanya Kalesi (castle district): A small number of atmospheric guesthouses in the old castle area.

On the Beach and Beyond

Alanya Castle (Alanya Kalesi)

The 13th-century Seljuk castle complex on the 250-metre promontory above Alanya is the defining landmark of the city. The Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) at the harbour base, the walls encircling the promontory, the Arsenal (tershane), and the inner castle (Iç Kale) with the Byzantine church ruins are all accessible. The view from the inner castle over the bay, Cleopatra Beach, and the Mediterranean to the horizon is one of the Turkish Riviera’s finest.

Damlataş Cave and Alanya Caves

The coastal cliffs around Alanya contain several notable caves: Damlataş Cave (adjacent to Cleopatra Beach — famous for its high humidity and stalactites), Dim Cave (10 km inland — one of Turkey’s longest illuminated caves with an underground lake), and the Pirates Cave and Lovers Cave accessible by boat on the eastern coast. Alanya’s cave culture is distinctive and popular.

Boat Trip to the Eastern Caves and Pirate Coast

The rocky eastern coastline of Alanya’s peninsula, inaccessible by land, is explored by boat tours from the harbour. The tours visit the Pirate Cave, Lovers Cave (accessible by swimming through the entrance), Phosphorescent Cave (bioluminescent plankton at night), and the Cleopatra Island. A morning boat trip is one of Alanya’s most enjoyable tourist activities.

Dim Çayı (Dim River)

The Dim River valley inland from Alanya — with its cold, clear mountain water and the Dim Dam reservoir surrounded by taurus mountains — provides a cool green alternative to the beach on the hottest days. River boat trips and swimming in the cold fresh water of the mountain river are refreshing experiences in July–August heat.

Turkish Hammam

Alanya has excellent traditional Turkish baths (hammam) — a Turkish hammam experience (steam, scrub, massage) is one of the most restorative treatments after days of Mediterranean sun. Several historical and modern hammams operate in the city.

FAQ

Is the Cleopatra sand really special? Yes — the sand at Cleopatra Beach is genuinely finer and whiter than most Turkish Riviera beaches. It is not imported from Egypt (the legend is almost certainly false) but is naturally fine-grained quartz and calcium carbonate. Whether Cleopatra ever visited Alanya is historically uncertain, though the Eastern Mediterranean area was under her influence during the Ptolemaic period.

Is Alanya suitable for families? Alanya is one of Turkey’s most family-oriented resorts. Cleopatra Beach is well-organised with lifeguards, facilities, and relatively calm water. The all-inclusive resort model is popular with families. The castle and caves provide non-beach activities for children.

How does Alanya compare to Side or Antalya? Side has a better-preserved Roman ruins context (the Temple of Apollo on the beach is extraordinary). Antalya’s old quarter (Kaleiçi) is more atmospheric and the city more sophisticated. Alanya has the best beach and castle combination and the most affordable resort infrastructure. For pure beach holiday value, Alanya competes well with any Turkish Riviera destination.
