The Beach
Ao Nang is the commercial centre of Krabi Province’s beach scene — the main departure point for the extraordinary island beaches of the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Lanta, Railay, and the Four Islands — and a substantial beach destination in its own right. The beach is genuinely beautiful: a kilometre of fine golden sand in a bay framed by the dramatic vertical limestone karst formations that make Krabi Province one of the most visually distinctive coastal landscapes on Earth. The white karst cliffs — rising 100–300 metres, their vertical faces draped in vegetation, reflected in the sea at high tide — are the visual signature of the Andaman coast and nowhere are they more dramatically present than in the immediate vicinity of Ao Nang.
The bay in front of the beach is busy with longtail boats — the traditional Thai wooden long-tailed motorboats that are as much a symbol of Thai coastal life as the tuk-tuk is of city life. These boats ferry visitors to the surrounding beach destinations throughout the day, and the sight of them threading between the limestone islands in the bay is one of the defining images of the Krabi Coast.
Ao Nang itself is a developed town — hotels, restaurants, bars, massage shops, and dive operators line the beach road and extend inland. It lacks the refined beauty of Railay (inaccessible by road, pure beach character) or the small-island intimacy of Koh Lanta or Koh Lipe, but it compensates with the practical advantages of convenience: easy transport connections, a wide choice of accommodation and restaurants, and the ability to reach the surrounding extraordinary landscapes by a short longtail ride.
The beach water quality is good — clearer than many busy beach towns — and the swimming is comfortable, with minimal waves in the protected bay. The beach itself is well-maintained and pleasant, if slightly overshadowed by the more spectacular beaches accessible by boat from its shores.
Getting There
Getting to Krabi
Krabi Airport (KBV) receives:
- Direct flights from Bangkok (Don Mueang via AirAsia, Nok Air; Suvarnabhumi via Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways)
- Direct international flights from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia), Singapore (Scoot), and several other cities in peak season
- Seasonal charter flights from European cities
Phuket International Airport (HKT) is approximately 3 hours from Ao Nang by road (or 1.5 hours by speedboat in good conditions). A major international hub with broader connections.
From Krabi Airport to Ao Nang
The airport is approximately 30 km from Ao Nang:
- By taxi: Standard option, approximately 30–40 minutes.
- By shuttle bus: Shared shuttle services from the airport to Ao Nang hotels run regularly and are significantly cheaper than private taxis.
- By minivan: Pre-booked through accommodation.
When to Go
Krabi Province is on the Andaman Sea and follows the same monsoon pattern as Koh Lipe:
- November to April (dry season): Excellent conditions. Calm seas, good visibility, reliable sunshine. Peak season is December–February.
- May to October (southwest monsoon): Rough seas, frequent heavy rain, and boat services to surrounding islands are reduced or suspended. The Andaman coast is significantly less pleasant in this period. Visits are possible but the weather is substantially less reliable.
Places to Stay
Ao Nang has accommodation from budget to luxury:
- Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi: A large luxury resort with a spectacular clifftop pool overlooking the bay.
- Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort: An excellent upscale property with a large pool complex.
- Arayaburi Resort: A well-reviewed mid-range option.
- Various guesthouses and small hotels: Abundant budget to mid-range options along the beach road and in the town centre.
Railay Beach (30 minutes by longtail, accessible only by boat — no road access due to the karst cliffs) is an alternative base within the same area, with a more beautiful and tranquil setting. Accommodation ranges from budget to luxury in an entirely car-free environment.
On the Beach and Beyond
Railay Beach Day Trip
Railay is the most spectacular beach immediately accessible from Ao Nang — a 20-minute longtail ride across the bay to a peninsula completely cut off from the mainland by sheer limestone cliffs. Railay has multiple beaches (West Railay for swimming and sunsets, East Railay for the karst lagoon, Phra Nang Cave Beach for the extraordinary cave shrine and beautiful water), world-class rock climbing, and the most dramatic landscape in Krabi Province. An essential day trip or, better, a multi-night stay.
Phi Phi Islands Day Trip
The Phi Phi Islands — Koh Phi Phi Don (inhabited) and Koh Phi Phi Leh (the famous Maya Bay, featured in the film “The Beach”) — are approximately 2 hours by speedboat from Ao Nang. The scenery is extraordinary: towering karst cliffs enclosing a beautiful bay on all sides. Day trips (and multi-night stays on Phi Phi Don) are widely available.
Sea Kayaking Through Cave Systems
One of Krabi Province’s most distinctive activities: guided sea kayak tours through tidal cave systems into hidden lagoons (hongs) enclosed by vertical limestone walls. The kayaks navigate the low cave entrances at the right tidal window, emerging into chambers open to the sky and completely enclosed by cliff — extraordinary secret environments found nowhere else in the world.
Rock Climbing
The limestone karst faces around Railay and Tonsai (accessible by longtail from Ao Nang) are among the world’s most celebrated sport climbing destinations, with hundreds of bolted routes from beginner to expert level on the vertical and overhanging cliff faces. Climbing schools cater to complete beginners with excellent instruction and equipment.
Four Islands Tour
A classic Krabi day trip by longtail or speedboat visiting four islands in the Krabi marine environment: Koh Mor, Koh Chueak, Koh Tub, and Koh Kai (Chicken Island) — each with snorkelling, swimming, and distinctive landscapes.
Common Questions
Is Ao Nang beach worth visiting on its own, or just as a base? Both. The beach is pleasant for a morning or afternoon, and the bay view with the karst formations is beautiful. But Ao Nang’s greatest value is as a base for the surrounding destinations — Railay, Phi Phi, sea caves, and islands. Most visitors do both.
How do you get to Railay from Ao Nang? By longtail boat from the northern end of Ao Nang beach. Longtails run throughout the day (when enough passengers have assembled) and return all day from Railay. The journey takes 15–20 minutes. There is a small fee.
Is the snorkelling good at Ao Nang? The snorkelling directly at Ao Nang beach is limited — the bay is busy with boat traffic and visibility is reduced. The best snorkelling in the area is at the surrounding islands (Four Islands, Phi Phi, Ko Lanta’s reefs) accessed on day trips.
Is it better to base yourself at Ao Nang or Railay? Railay for a quieter, more beautiful beach experience and rock climbing/cave access. Ao Nang for practical convenience, broader accommodation choice, and easier onward connections. Many visitors combine a few nights in each.
